Box Score 4 Riverdale, N.Y. - Over the holiday break, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's basketball programs continued to work, as both the men's and women's teams took part in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Lehman College. The games took place on December 28 and 29, and the Dolphins walked away winning and losing one game apiece.
The
James Mooney-led men's team dropped their first game to Lehman College by the score of 84-60 on day one and scored a seven point victory on day two over Southern Maine University. The Dolphins struggled as a whole on offense against Lehman, with the team shooting just 39% from the field. The game against Southern Maine, however, was a different story, as five different players had double-digit scoring efforts.
Matthew Sowah paced his team with 14 points while
Andrew Curiel secured a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Freshmen
Makai Johnson and
Vinny Tavella had standout performances, too, with 12 and 11 point games, respectively.
Like the men, the women also split their two-day slate of games during the tournament. After falling to Fairleigh Dickinson University,
Tiffany Smart and her squad rebounded nicely against SUNY Canton. Junior
Kelly Oliver was impressive throughout both games, as she averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Kelly Nola and
Aria Rheams were also impressive in their team's victory, as the senior notched 16 points while the freshman had 11 points and 13 boards.
As 2018 begins, both basketball programs will return to competition rather quickly, as the men will play Old Westbury on January 2 while the women take on Purchase the following day.
