RIVERDALE, NY - The CMSV Men's Basketball team returned to action on Friday night, hosting Skyline Conference foe, Purchase College. The Panthers took control of the game midway through the first half and cruised to an 83-69 victory, dropping the Dolphins to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in conference.
Matthew Sowah led four Dolphins in double-figures, as the junior scored 17 points, thanks to a career best four made three pointers.
Jason Barrera came off the bench to add 13 points and seven rebounds, while Kahlil Shorter and
Krystian Kopec scored 10 apiece for the Mount.
Purchase started off scoring the first three points, which CMSV countered by scoring six straight, capped off by a contested jumper by Shorter, who scored all 10 of his points in the first half. The Mount pushed their lead to six points with 12:37 remaining in the half after two made free throws by Shorter made the score 11-5.
Kewan Beebe tied the score at 13-13 with 8:47 left in the half and for the next few possessions the lead would trade hands. Barrera made a layup with 5:59 left in the half to put the home side ahead 21-19, but that would be the final lead CMSV would hold the rest of the game.
The Panthers would end the half on a 17-8 run to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room.
Purchase would lead the entire second half, with CMSV getting as close as five points on two different occasions. The first occasion came on the Mount's opening possession of the second half on a layup by
David Collins to make the score 36-31.
A few minutes later, Kopec would connect on a 3-pointer to pull the Dolphins within five at 42-37 with 16:03 left. But after that shot, the Panthers rattled off an 18-5 run, capped off by a fast break layup by Beebe, who led all scorers with 23 points, to make the score 60-42 with 9:43 left. The lead would never shrink to below 12 points down the stretch.
