FARMINGDALE, NY - The CMSV Women's Basketball team returned to action on Tuesday evening, traveling to Long Island to take on Skyline Conference foe, Farmingdale State. The Dolphins came back from a 15 point halftime deficit, to earn their 7th straight win, 83-82 over the Rams. The Dolphins have won 10 of their last 11 games and haven't lost yet in 2017.
Ryan Doherty and
Kelly Oliver led the way for the Mount, as both players set new career high's in points. Doherty scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both team high's, while Olver chipped in with 17 points, including going 4-of-10 from 3-point land.
Kristen Merrell had an efficient night shooting 8-of-13 for 16 points, while
Brittany Carroll added 13 points.
The Dolphins survived a terrible first half shooting performance, as the team only shot 25% from the field, while connecting on just 2-of-17 from 3-point land in the first 20 minutes of action.
The second half began with the Rams pushing their lead to 18 points less than two minutes into the third.
After that, the quarter belonged to the Dolphins, specifically Doherty and Oliver, who combined to score 19 of the 25 CMSV points in the quarter. Oliver nailed 3 3-pointers, while Doherty got out on the break, going 3-of-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Merrell, the only other Dolphin to score in the third quarter, hit a layup in the final seconds to cut the Farmingdale lead to 54-51 entering the fourth.
In the fourth, the Dolphins twice cut the lead down to one, first, on their opening possession on a Merrell layup and then a few possessions later on an Oliver three. The Rams answered with a 3 of their own to get the lead back to four with just under eight minutes left in the game.
Merrell nailed a jumper with 7:01 left to tie the score at 60.
Kelly Nola stepped to the line just over a minute later to nail two free throws, giving CMSV their first lead of the game at 62-61.
The next few possessions, the teams would trade buckets and the lead but a Carroll 3-pointer with 4:17 on the clock put the Dolphins ahead by three and the team would never trail again.
Carroll would strike again with 2:51 remaining with another 3-pointer to give the visitors a six point lead. Down the stretch, each time the Rams scored, the Dolphins answered with a basket of their own and in the final minute of play CMSV would connect on 5-of-8 from the free throw line, which proved just enough as Farmingdale would hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, while trailing by four points.
