RIVERDALE, NY - The #4 seeded CMSV Dolphins hosted #5 seed NJCU on Wednesday night, in a first round matchup in the 2016 Skyline Men's Volleyball Championships.
After falling in the first two sets, the Dolphins came back to win the final three sets to advance to Friday's semifinals where they will face-off against top-seeded Kean University.
CMSV dropped the first two sets 25-20 & 25-19 but rallied to take the final three sets by the scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 15-9.
Skyline Conference Player of the Week
Tyler Cucullu led all players tallying 23 kills, 10 digs, two total blocks and two aces.
Jordan Steiger added 14 kills, while
Sean O'Connor chipped in with 10 kills. Setter
Logan Dickover was solid dishing out 41 assists.
The Dolphins comeback started in the third set as the team jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, taking advantage of poorly placed NJCU attacks. The Gothic Knights began to chip away at the lead getting to within three points over the course of the next few possessions but back-to-back NJCU errors gave CMSV a 20-15 lead. The Gothic Knights had one more push in them and cut the CMSV lead to 23-22 but would be undone by sloppy passing to fall 25-23.
In the fourth set, NJCU came out to take a 7-3 lead as the Gothic Knights attacks began to find open space on the Dolphins side. CMSV trailed 12-8 but would win eight of nine points to take a 16-13 lead, capped off on a kill from Steiger. The Dolphins would win five of the last six points, the final four via kills to take the set 25-20.
In the fifth set, the Dolphins wasted no time getting ahead, as they led 5-1 thanks to poorly placed attacks from NJCU. The Gothic Knights eventually turned it around cutting the CMSV lead to 9-8 but the Dolphins would take six of the next seven points and clinch a berth in the semifinals thanks to a kill from Cucullu.
The Dolphins move on the the semifinals where they will take on #1 Kean University on Friday April 8 at 7pm.
