RIVERDALE, NY - The CMSV women's basketball team hosted #3 Old Westbury on Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2016 Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Championships. The Panthers defeated the Dolphins 82-69, to advance to Saturday's Skyline Conference Women's Basketball Championship.
The Dolphins were led by
Christina Barone who scored a game-high 22 points and dished out six assists.
Kristen Merrell added 15 points, while
Theresa Carey grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
In front of a packed house at the Peter Jay Sharp Center, CMSV came out and were the more aggressive team in the first quarter. The Dolphins shot 3-of-6 from 3-point land to lead 19-12 after 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the Dolphins continued their aggressive play and increased their lead to 10 points after a fastbreak layup by
Allison Clarke put her team up 24-14. But over the final 7:42 of the first half, the Panthers would go on a 22-6 run to lead 36-30 going into halftime.
The Dolphins wouldn't lead over the course of the final 20 minutes but did cut the Panthers lead down to four less than a minute into play in the fourth quarter. Merrell would make a layup but miss the free throw and the Panthers would score on their next three possessions and control the game down the stretch.
CMSV wrap's up the 2015-16 season with a 17-9 record, marking the third straight season, the CMSV women's basketball team has won 17 or more games.
The Dolphins will say goodbye to four seniors,
Nicole Oliver,
Morgan Dewberry,
Theresa Carey and
Alexandra Gundermann.
