Dolphins Fall In Four Sets At Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team dropped its sixth straight match to open the season on Tuesday following a 15-25, 22-25, 25-14, 21-25 road loss at Rutgers-Newark. Senior Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished the match with a career-high 28 kills for the Dolphins.
 
Trailing by a set, Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the second set capped off by a Scozzari kill. The Dolphins moved in front 21-18 on a Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) winner before Rutgers-Newark ran off seven of the final eight points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Dolphins climbed back to within a set with a convincing win in the third set. The Mount hit .281 in the frame, putting away 14 kills. Mount Saint Vincent took control of the set, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the frame. Leading 17-14, the Dolphins closed the stanza with the final eight points. Scozzari hit .381 in the set for the Dolphins, recording 11 of the team's 14 kills.
 
Rutgers-Newark rebounded in the fourth, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Dolphins knotted the score with the next final tallies, before the Scarlet Raiders closed with a 6-3 spurt to put the fourth set away and win the match 3-1.
 
Scozzari bested her previous career-high in kills by eight winners while hitting .262 in the match. She added five digs for the Dolphins and four total blocks. Daluz finished the night with eight winners and six digs, while Maria Leineweber (Waimanalo, Hawaii) put away nine kills, adding nine digs and five service aces.
 
Sophomore Nicole Henderson (Bergenfield, N.J.) handed out 41 assists, reaching the 40 helper plateau in a match for the first time in her career. She also contributed five digs and five total blocks. Freshman Chrissy Sewell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was one of three Dolphins in double-figures in digs, equaling the match-high with 19. Senior Jennifer Roman (Queens Village, N.Y.) lifted 13 digs and Kristine Javier (Fair Lawn, N.J.) added 11 digs.

Rutgers-Newark was paced by 10 kills and 16 digs from Cassie Luken. Sue Riley lifted 19 digs for the Scarlet Raiders with Hayley Merrill producing nine kills and 12 digs. Nathalie Breining led Rutgers-Newark with 20 assists.
 
For the match, Mount Saint Vincent held the advantage in kills 51-40, but committed 16 more attack errors than the Scarlet Raiders. The Dolphins took the edge in service aces 10-4, while total team blocks in the match were even at 6-6.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-6 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is the 2015 home opener on Saturday when the Mount plays host to Arcadia and William Paterson. Matches at the Peter Jay Sharp Center are scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
