Women’s Soccer Suffers Overtime Loss In Hudson Classic Opener

Riverdale, N.Y. – Junior Courtney LaTorre (Denville, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team was dealt a hard fought 2-1 overtime loss to New Jersey City University in the first game of the 2015 Hudson Classic.
 
The Dolphins fell behind early in Saturday's home opener when Katherin Merino scored her first goal of the season for the Gothic Knights in the seventh minute of play. She took a pass on the left wing from Kaydee Murphy and snuck her shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead at the 6:06 mark of the match.
 
Just over 20 minutes later, Mount Saint Vincent leveled the match at a goal apiece when LaTorre scored the team's first goal of the 2015 season. She took a pass near the top of the box from Victoria Astorino (Warwick, N.Y.) and tucked a shot under the bar at 26:17 to bring the Mount even at 1-1.
 
LaTorre's goal closed out the scoring in regulation time and heading into halftime, Mount Saint Vincent held an 11-4 advantage in shots, while the Gothic Knights took the only corner kick in the opening 45 minutes.
 
The Dolphins took seven of the 13 shots in the second half on Saturday afternoon, but could not solve NJCU keeper Cassie Lubonski. She made five saves after halftime to keep the game even at 1-1.
 
Mount Saint Vincent had a chance to end the game early in the overtime period when a shot from Nicole Weber (Flushing, N.Y.) hit the post in the first half minute of the extra frame. The Dolphins outshot the Gothic Knights 2-1 in the overtime period, but NJCU got the game winner when Laura Bustamante turned a turnover into a goal at 97:36 to give the visitors the one goal victory.
 
The Dolphins finished the game with a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Caroline Criscuola (Merrick, N.Y.) led the Mount with four shots, while Merino led the visitors with four attempts in the game.
 
Sophomore Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) stopped three shots in the game for Mount Saint Vincent, with Lubonski earning the victory in goal with 11 saves for the Gothic Knights.
 
NJCU closed out the game with a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, while fouls in the match were whistled 15-13 against Mount Saint Vincent.
 
At 0-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Vincent will take on SUNY Delhi on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off with the Broncos is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
