Mount Saint Vincent Suffers Five Set Loss To USMMA

Scozzari totals 22 kills, Daluz posts double-double

Riverdale, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent senior Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) put away 22 kills and classmate Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) produced a double-double, but the Dolphins suffered a five set non-conference loss to visiting USMMA on Thursday by scores of 13-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-20, 12-15.
 
The Dolphins struggled in the first two sets on Thursday, combining for just 11 kills in falling behind 2-0. The visiting Mariners produced 18 kills in building the early two set advantage and hit .333 in the second frame, committing just a single attack error.
 
Mount Saint Vincent won the third set and cut its deficit to 2-1 by putting away 17 kills and hitting .295 as a unit. Scozzari hit .467 in the set, finishing with eight kills and five digs. Maria Leineweber (Waimanalo, Hawaii) recorded four winners for the Dolphins in the set.
 
The Dolphins evened the match in the fourth with 16 more kills. The Mariners hit .292 in the fourth set, but managed just seven winners. Scozzari hit an efficient .643 in the fourth set and picked up nine more kills for the Dolphins.
 
In the deciding fifth set, Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a 4-2 lead following a Scozzari winner and later expanded its lead to 8-4 following a USMMA attack error. The Dolphins maintained the lead until a five point USMMA run capped by a Mount Saint Vincent miscue that pushed it in front 11-10.
 
The Dolphins pulled even at 11-11, but saw the visitors reel off four of the final five points to rally for their eighth victory of the season.
 
Scozzarin closed the night with a match-high 22 kills and hit .340. She recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 digs and added two blocks and a pair of assists. Daluz posted her first double-double of the season as well on Thursday, posting 11 kills and 13 digs.

Leineweber led all players in the match with 20 digs, adding eight kills for the Dolphins. Freshman Patsy Sewell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) closed the night with a career-high 29 assists and added a pair of service aces and seven digs.
 
USMMA was led by a team-high 15 kills from Brianne Cook who added 13 digs and 13 assists. Dominque Pope and Gabby Marionakis each lifted 18 digs for the Mariners, while Kayla Gleanson led the team with 22 assists and six total blocks.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent finished with a 49-42 advantage in kills, while USMMA finished with a 17-6 edge in service aces. The Mariners also dominated the blocking game, posting an 11.5-2 edge in total team blocks.
 
Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-8 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a home non-conference match against Hunter on September 29. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
