Women’s Basketball Scores Non-Conference Win At USMMA

Kings Point, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) poured in a game and season-high 33 points and sophomore Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out 10 assists as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team earned an 81-64 non-conference road win on Monday night at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
 
After allowing the first bucket of the game, Mount Saint Vincent scored 21 of the next 31 points to open a 21-12 lead on a Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) three-point field goal with 12:35 left in the first half. USMMA would slice its disadvantage to one on a Myckenzie Toler triple with 8:51 left in the half and then again on a Jenna Wetherington bucket with7:51 left, but could not pull even with the Dolphins before halftime.
 
The Dolphins would move in front by 12, their largest lead of the half, twice in the last 5:30 of the half, but saw USMMA close the stanza on a 14-5 run to pull to within 43-40 heading into the intermission. The Mount was held without a field goal after a Barone three-pointer with 3:20 remaining in the period.
 
Both teams were efficient in the opening stanza, with USMMA shooting an even 50-percent and the Dolphins converting at a 58.8-percent clip. The Dolphins outscored USMMA by 10 points in the paint and were led by 18 points from Fraser, who went 9-for-12 from the floor.
 
USMMA would stay within eight points over the first 13:35 of the second half and pulled to within two points with a pair of free-throws from Demi Vanderwal that got the Mariners deficit down to 55-53 with 10:30 left in regulation time.
 
Mount Saint Vincent got its lead to double figures on a Fraser bucket that moved it in front 63-53 with 6:25 left to play. The basket was part of a 26-7 run late in the second half that saw the Dolphins take their largest lead of the game, at 81-60, on an Alexandra Gundermann (Tuxedo, N.Y.) lay-in with 51 seconds left in the contest.
The Dolphins held USMMA to 28-percent shooting after halftime and scored 11 points off of 10 Mariner turnovers. The Dolphins cooled to 37.8-percent shooting in the second half, but received 15 point from Fraser in the second stanza.
 
Fraser has scored at least 20 points in three of the team's last four games and has posted a double-double in each of her last four outings. She finished Monday's contest 16-for-25 from the floor, posting a career-high in field goals. She totaled 15 rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Dolphins in the win.
 
Barone picked up her sixth double-double of the season after adding 12 points to her game-high assist total. Carey finished the night with nine points and five steals and Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) produced eight points and six rebounds.
 
The Dolphins finished the game shooting 47.9-percent from the floor and outscored USMMA 42-24 in the paint, 19-10 off of turnovers, 15-4 in second chance scoring and 14-2 in fast break points.
 
Monday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 16-5 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a Skyline Conference tilt on Wednesday against Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off with the Knights is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
