OLD WESTBURY, NY - The CMSV women's basketball team took on SUNY Old Westbury, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers held on for a 66-63 victory, dropping the Dolphins to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
CMSV was led by
Kelly Nola who scored a career high 14 points, on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, the sophomore also grabbed eight rebounds.
Alexandra Gundermann chipped in with 12 points, while
Theresa Carey led the team grabbing 12 rebounds.
The Dolphins opened up the game in control, leading 4-0 less than a minute into play. The rest of the opening period was back and forth with neither team taking a lead larger than four points.
Brittany Carroll nailed a three with 1:32 left to give the Dolphins a 17-14 lead. A pair of Panther free throws would make the score 17-16 CMSV at the end of one period of play.
CMSV struggled to find offensive rythm in the second period, as the team scored six points in the entire quarter. The Dolphins shot 32% from the field over the first 20 minutes and o nly made 1-of-10 from distance.
Old Westbury increased their halftime lead to 10 points a little over three minutes into play. It would grow to as large as much as 17 points with 5:39 remaining in the period.
In the final period, the Dolphins began to cut into the lead, trimming the 19 point deficit thanks to a 17-5 run in the opening minutes of the period.; Gundermann nailed a jumper with 5:19 left in the game to cut the lead to 61-56.
The Dolphins would get to within four after a jumper by Carroll and then get to within three, but Carroll's last second attempt to tie the game didn't connect and the Panthers held on for a 66-63 victory.
CMSV returns to action January 4, 2016 when they will take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 5:30pm.
