RIVERDALE, NY - The CMSV Dolphins advanced to the Skyline Women's Volleyball Championship game with a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph's College-Long Island on Thursday night. The Dolphins will take on #3 seed Mount Saint Mary's at 5pm on Saturday in the Peter Jay Sharp Center.
The first set started out with the Dolphins and the Golden Eagles trading points with strong attacking play. After a
Maria Leineweber kill to put the Dolphins up 8-6, the Golden Eagles would go on a five point run to take an 11-8 lead, forcing a CMSV timeout.
St. Joe's continued their strong play after the timeout extending their lead to 17-12. But from that point forward the Dolphins awoke rattling off eight straight points to take a 20-17 lead thanks to three aces by
Jennifer Roman. They would close out the 25-20 victory winning the final five points.
The Dolphins fell behind early in the set 6-1 but would once again go on a scoring run thanks to the serves of Roman to tie the game at six. With neither team taking a lead larger than three points, until St. Joe's would pull ahead 22-16. The Dolphins didn't go down quietly as they would pull even at 24 on back-to-back kills by
Ashleigh Scozzari but ultimately St. Joe's won the set 26-24.
In the third set the Dolphins once again fell behind mid-way through the set, trailing 13-9 but they would counter with strong attacking play and serve placement to chip away at the lead winning 16 of the next 22 points to close out the set 25-19.
Early on in the 4th set the teams went back and forth with the set being tied three times but the Golden Eagles would pull ahead 15-11 once again awakening the Dolphins. They would chip away pulling to within three points two different time before finally catching their opponents during a seven point run to turn a 19-16 defecit into a 23-19 lead. Scozzari and
Zana Daluz would close out game with kills to give the Dolphins the win.
Scozzari led all players with 18 kills and six total blocks, while Leineweber added 10 kills and Daluz added nine. Roman was outstanding with her serves, as she tallied nine aces and
Nicole Henderson dished out 37 assists.
