Riverdale, N.Y. - The College of Mount Saint Vincent swept a tri-match with Sage College and Yeshiva on Sunday from the Peter J. Sharp Center in Riverdale, New York. The Dolphins defeated the Gators, 3-0 and prevailed over the Maccabees, 3-0.
In the opening match, the Dolphins prevailed over the Gators, 3-0, in a battle of two of the Skyline's top teams. Mount Saint Vincent won the sets by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-21.
Maria Leineweber (Waimanalo, Hawaii) posted a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs, while
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.), a day after reaching the 1000 kill plateau, added to her lifetime tally with a match-best 20 more kills.
The first set was close throughout as neither said led by more than six points. The set was tied on nine different occasions, the last time at 22-22. From there, the Dolphins put the set away with a block from Scozzari and a pair of kills from Leineweber.
Set two saw Sage jump out to a 7-3 lead before Mount Saint Vincent responded. The Dolphins got kills from Scozzari and Leineweber and a block assist from
Nicole Henderson and Scozzari to even the score at 7-7. The Gators countered with a run of their own to lead 13-8. Mount Saint Vincent slowly, methodically chipped away at the deficit and finally leveled the set at 20-20. The Dolphins scored the final three points of the set on kills from Leineweber, Scozzari and
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.).
Early in the third set, the Dolphins led 6-4. From there, they used a 9-2 run to grab a 15-6 lead and take a stranglehold on the set. Sage got as close as three points, but Mount Saint Vincent took the set, 25-21.
Nicole Henderson (Bergenfield, N.J.) collected 39 assists.
Mount Saint Vincent closed out the day with a 3-0 triumph over Yeshiva. The scores were 25-14, 25-6 and 25-11. The Dolphins pushed the lead in the first set to as many as 12 points before a service error from Yeshiva gave them the set.
Set two saw Mount Saint Vincent go ahead, 14-3. The strong serving of
Kristine Javier (Fair Lawn, N.J.) keyed the fast start. An Erika Moncanda (Yonkers, N.Y.) kill finished the set at 25-6.
The final set was keyed by the strong serving of
Shannon Walsh (Yonkers, N.Y.). For the match,
Chrissy Sewell finished with 11 digs.
With the victories, the Dolphins improved to 9-13 overall and 5-1 in the Skyline Conference. The team returns to action on Thursday, October 22, when they host the College of New Rochelle. The opening serve with the Blue Angels is slated for 7:00 PM.
