Women’s Soccer Handed First Loss By Farmingdale State

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team had its season opening five game winning streak stopped on Sunday afternoon after falling to Skyline Conference preseason favorite Farmingdale State by a score of 3-0. Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) made four saves for the Dolphins.
 
Farmingdale State, who has won each of the last seven league championships, got off to a fast start on Sunday with a goal in the third minute. Sam Johrden crossed a ball into the box off a corner kick that Taylor Howard deposited for the eventual game winning goal at the 2:57 mark of the contest.
 
The Rams would take the one goal advantage into the halftime intermission on Sunday after posting an 11-6 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Martin made three stops in the first 45 minutes for the Mount, while Farmingdale State's Breanna Blair was forced to make five saves.
 
The visitors would double their lead early in the second half when Ashlee Thompson found the back of the net at 51:53. She took a pass through the middle from Howard to put the Rams in front 2-0. Farmingdale State would later close out the scoring in the 65th minute when Amanda Khare finished off a centering pass from Alena Gannon at 64:26.
 
Farmingdale State outshot Mount Saint Vincent 14-4 after halftime on its way to a 25-10 edge in the game. The Rams also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game were whistled against the Mount 14-8.
 
The Rams finished with seven players with at least two shots in the game, led by four each from Khare, Thompson, Howard and Melissa Lijo. Howard finished the game with three points on a goal and an assist. Julia McGowan (Pearl River, N.Y.) posted a team-high three shots for the Dolphins.
 
Martin suffered her first career loss in goal for the Mount, but matched her career-high with four stops in the game. She has now played a team-high 351:44 between the pipes in 2014 and holds a 0.77 goals against average and a .769 save percentage. Blair rounded out the game with seven saves for the Rams.
 
With Sunday's loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 5-1 overall on the season and to 0-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a road game at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
