Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cooper Union, Collects First Win Of 2014 Season

Riverdale, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent junior Jennifer Roman (Queens Village, N.Y.) posted a career-high 13 service aces as the Women's Volleyball team cruised to their first win of the season, sweeping Cooper Union by scores of 25-7, 25-9 and 25-8. The victory also marked the first career triumph for first year head coach Alyssa Kaufman.
 
After allowing the first two points of the evening, Mount Saint Vincent ripped off the next 20 points to take control of the first set and the match. Roman played a big role in the run for the Dolphins, totaling 11 of her service aces, including six straight.
 
The Dolphins hit .429 as a team in the opening stanza, posting 12 service aces and just four kills. Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) picked up two winners in three attempts for the Mount in the frame.
 
The Mount carried its momentum into the second set, hitting .500 with nine kills to go along with 10 more aces. Freshman Nicole Henderson (Bergenfield, N.J.) added four aces in the set for Mount Saint Vincent with Scozzari and Ana Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) combining for seven kills.
 
The Dolphins would put away their first win of the season with nine aces in the third set, while taking advantage of six Cooper Union attack errors. Scozzari and Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) each put away two kills in the set and Henderson added five more aces.
 
For the match, Mount Saint Vincent finished with 31 service aces which is one short of tying the program record of 32 set on October 24, 2006 against Marymount. The Dolphins hit a season-high .351 in the contest as a team and posted a 19-4 advantage in kills on the night.
 
Roman added four digs to her service ace total on Friday, with Henderson rounding out the night with nine aces and a match-high 13 assists. Kristine Javier (Fair Lawn, N.J.) also had a strong night with six aces and three digs. The 13 ace performance for Roman is three shy of the program mark of 16 set by Bridget Leonard against New Rochelle on September 20, 2007.
 
Scozzari paced the Dolphins with eight kills and a .545 hitting percentage, with Rodriguez adding four winners in five attempts.
 
With Friday's victory, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 1-7 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to York to take on the Cardinals and William Peterson. Matches are set to get underway at 12:00 p.m.
