New York, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball squad recorded its second straight victory on Tuesday with an important 55-50 road league triumph at Yeshiva. Three Dolphins scored in double-figures in the game, led by a game-high 23 points from senior
Brandon Serrano (Hempstead, N.Y.).
Tuesday's game was played inside an eight point window the entire night and featured 11 ties and 20 lead changes. The final lead change in the game came with 4:10 left in regulation when a Serrano conversion moved the Dolphins in front 50-48.
In the opening 20 minutes on Tuesday, the two teams battled to five deadlocks and 10 lead changes as the two sides headed into the intermission tied at 27-27.
Kevin Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) led the Mount with eight points as the Dolphins shot just shy of 41-percent from the floor. Shlomo Weissberg led all scorers at the break for Yeshiva with 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
Mount Saint Vincent would gain its first lead of the second half when a
Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) bucket moved the Dolphins in front 31-29 with just over 17 minutes left in regulation. The two teams would trade the lead over the next 13 minutes before a Serrano layup broke a 48-48 tie with 4:10 left to move the Dolphins in front for good in the game.
The Mount Saint Vincent defense held Yeshiva to just one field goal over the final 5:23 of the contest and the Dolphins got a three-point play from Serrano with six seconds left to give the Mount its largest lead of the night and the final five point decision.
Despite shooting just 11-percent from three-point range, Mount Saint Vincent shot 41.1-percent from the floor on Tuesday and just shy of 73-percent from the free-throw line. The Dolphins outscored the Maccabees 8-0 at the free-throw line and 19-4 off of turnovers.
Serrano finished the game 10-for-21 from the floor to go along with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Henry went 6-for-10 from the floor on the way to 12 points and six rebounds, while Fraser came off the bench to score 10 points and haul in six rebounds.
Junior
Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) hit the Mount's only three-pointer in the game and finished with seven points and joined
Kahlil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) with two assists each.
Yeshiva rounded out the game shooting 42.9-percent from the floor, but was held without a free-throw attempt in the game. It's the first time since prior to the 2003-04 season the Dolphins have not allowed an attempt from the free-throw line and is the fewest attempts since allowing two to Sarah Lawrence on December 5, 2012.
Weissberg closed the game with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Benjy Ritholtz posted 11 points and nine rebounds for the Maccabees. Eitan Selevan led all players with five assists in the game and Yisrael Feld added four assists and six points.
With Tuesday's win, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 7-13 overall and 5-8 in league play. The Dolphins, who now hold the final Skyline Conference Tournament position, will be back in action again on Saturday when they travel to Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off with the Knights is set for 1:00 p.m.
