Barone’s Career-High Leads Mount Saint Vincent Past New Rochelle

Sophomore guard nets 23 points in victory

New Rochelle, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team got back into the win column on Friday night with a 72-64 road win at New Rochelle. Sophomore guard Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the lone Dolphin in double-figures, netting a career-high 23 points in the win.
 
The Dolphins trailed briefly in the early going on Friday, falling behind 7-4 on a Hannah Cambel three-pointer 2:51 into the contest. Barone answered with a lay-up to cut the Mount Saint Vincent deficit to 7-6, starting a quick 9-2 spurt that pushed the Dolphins in front 13-9. Barone totaled four points in the spurt and junior Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) added a three-pointer.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would not surrender the lead the rest of the game and closed the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 37-25 lead into halftime. The Mount held New Rochelle without a point over the final 3:38 of the first half and allowed the Blue Angels to shoot just 32-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Barone and Carey paced the Dolphins in the opening period with seven points apiece, with Barone adding a team-high seven rebounds before the break. The Dolphins shot an even 40-percent in the first half, going 14-for-35 from the floor.
 
Coming out of halftime, both teams went scoreless until a Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper 2:19 into the period. The bucket started a 10-4 spurt to open the half for the Mount with a Barone lay-in at the 14:39 mark pushing the Dolphins in front 47-29.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would open its largest lead of the game, at 57-32, on a Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) conversion midway through the second half and did not allow New Rochelle closer than 10 points until a 30-11 stretch pulled it to within six points in the final minute.
 
Barone went 5-for-8 from the floor after halftime and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line on her way to 16 points. The Mount went 14-for-31 after halftime and outscored the Blue Angels 24-6 in the paint.
 
Barone rounded out the night 8-for-13 from the floor and added a career-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She handed out three assists and swiped a pair of steals for the Dolphins in the win.
 
Junior Morgan Dewberry (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots with Carroll and Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scoring eight points. Carroll led the team on Friday with four assists.
 
Four of the five New Rochelle starters scored in double-figures on Friday with Jah-Leah Ellis and Cambel each scoring 19 points. The duo combined for 11 of the team's 18 made field goals in the game with Ellis adding a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent shot just over 42-percent from the floor with New Rochelle converting on just 30-percent of its chances. The Dolphins dominated points in the paint, outscoring New Rochelle 44-8 inside, and turned 26 Blue Angel turnovers into 28 points.
 
At 2-1 overall, Mount Saint Vincent will continue a five game road swing on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Medgar Evers. Tip-off with the Cougars is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
