Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team was eliminated from the Skyline Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon after playing fifth seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. to a 2-2 draw, with the Golden Eagles advancing to the semifinal round on penalty kicks 3-1. Freshman
Joyce Pagliuca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with a goal and an assist for the Mount.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first half on Saturday when Pagliuca tallied for the seventh time in 2014 in the 42
nd minute. She picked up a turnover in the box and tucked a shot inside the far post for the one goal advantage heading into halftime.
St. Joseph's finished the first half with a commanding 9-2 advantage in shots and took three of the four corner kicks in the period, but could not beat Mount Saint Vincent keeper
Kerilyn O'Keeffe (Bronx, N.Y.). O'Keeffe made five saves prior to halftime to keep the Dolphins in front 1-0.
The visitors would get the equalizer early in the second half on Saturday when Claire Brady leveled the score at 1-1 in the 51
st minute. She took a deflected pass from Kristin Carroll and snuck a shot inside the right post at 50:43 to knot the score at a goal apiece.
Just over eight minutes later, Mount Saint Vincent would retake a one goal lead when freshman
Caroline Criscuola (North Merrick, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the season at 58:58. She received a pass at the top of the box and drove a shot under the bar for the Dolphins' second one goal advantage of the game.
The 2-1 lead would hold up until the 89
th minute when Brianna Mascia found the back of the net for the first time in 2014. She buried a feed from Carroll to bring the Golden Eagles back even 88:36 into the match.
The visitors took nine of the 12 shots in the second half, forcing O'Keeffe to make two more saves. In the two overtime periods on Saturday, St. Joseph's held a 3-1 advantage in shots, taking all three of their shots in the second overtime period.
Deadlock at 2-2 following 110 minutes of action, the game advanced to penalty kicks. After both teams converted on their first attempt, with
Megan DeRosa (Cornwall, N.Y.) posting the Mount's only successful attempt, the Mount misfired on their next three shots. St. Joseph's got a conversion from Joann Murino and a save from Katie McGarrell in the final round to advance on to the semifinal round against Farmingdale State on Wednesday.
Pagliuca finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Dolphins, while Carroll assisted on both goals for the Golden Eagles. O'Keeffe finished the game with nine saves in the game, while McGarrell finished with one save in earning the victory.
Mount Saint Vincent was outshot in the game 21-6, including 18-5 in regulation time, and the Golden Eagles took six of the seven corner kicks in the game. Fouls on the afternoon went against the Mount 17-11.
Saturday's result moves Mount Saint Vincent to 13-4-1 overall on the season.
