Riverdale, N.Y. – Led by 12 kills from sophomore
Maria Leineweber (Waimanalo, Hawaii) and seven service aces from
Nicole Henderson (Bergenfield, N.J.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team picked up a 25-7, 25-14, 25-10 win over Sarah Lawrence in its first conference match of the season. The victory gives Mount Saint Vincent a season-long three match winning streak.
The Dolphins trailed only briefly on Saturday, falling behind 1-0 on a Sarah Lawrence service ace to open the second set. Mount Saint Vincent used a 6-0 run to erase the deficit, keyed by three service aces and a kill from Henderson.
Mount Saint Vincent hit at least .300 in each of the three sets against the Gryphons on its way to hitting a season-high .375 as a team. The Dolphins hit .400 in the opening frame, committing just two attack errors and hit .385 in the middle stanza, putting away 12 kills in 26 attempts. The Mount closed out the match hitting .333 in the final frame.
Leineweber hit a blistering .611 on Saturday for the Dolphins on her way to a season-high kill total. She also added three aces and six digs to the winning effort.
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted nine winners and a .533 attack percentage to go along with 10 digs for the Mount. Junior
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) rounded out the day with five kills in the victory.
Henderson continued her strong rookie campaign on Saturday with a match-high 22 assists to go along with her seven aces.
Jennifer Roman (Queens Village, N.Y.) finished off the day with a match-high 11 digs for the Dolphins, while
Kristine Javier (Fair Lawn, N.J.) totaled two aces and a pair of digs.
Overall in the match, Mount Saint Vincent finished with 30 kills against just six attack errors and held the advantage in winners 30-8. The Dolphins reached at least 20 service aces in a match for the second time this season after holding a 20-6 edge in the category and Scozzari picked up the only block of the match for the Mount.
With Saturday's victory, Mount Saint Vincent moves to 6-9 overall on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back on the floor again on Tuesday when they travel to the City College of New York. Match time with the Beavers is set for 7:00 p.m.
