Dennis Reyes (Waldwick, N.J.) scored his 21
st goal of the season in the first half and sophomore
Pablo Tellez (El Monte, Calif.) netted his second of the season in the second half to send the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team to a 2-1 home win over Purchase on Wednesday, clinching the program's first trip to the conference tournament.
Purchase would open the scoring with the first goal of the game in the 23
rd minute on Wednesday when Samvara Anello dribbled into the box and tucked a shot into the bottom right corner at 22:08 for the early one goal advantage.
Mount Saint Vincent wasted little time knotting the score when Reyes found the back of the net just 13 seconds later to even the tilt at a goal apiece. The goal was Reyes' team leading 21
st of the season and he extended his single season points record to 47.
At halftime on Wednesday, Mount Saint Vincent held a 9-6 advantage in shots and a commanding 8-1 edge in corner kicks in the opening stanza. Both
David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Esteban Aguilar made three saves for their respective teams in the half.
The game would remained tied at 1-1 until Tellez broke through for the Dolphins at the 63:01 mark of the contest. He finished off a passing play from Reyes and
John Everson (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) that originated at the top of the box. Tellez received the pass on the left wing and scored to the far post for his first career game winning tally.
Purchase finished the second half with a 9-7 advantage in shots, but could not get one past Melchor. The Dolphins rounded out the game with a 16-15 edge in the category and took eight of the 12 corner kicks in the contest.
Melchor picked up his ninth win of the season after finishing the game with eight saves. Aguilar rounded out the day with four stops for the Panthers.
With the win, Mount Saint Vincent closes out the regular season at 9-9 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Dolphins will play host to St. Joseph's-L.I. in the opening round of the conference tournament on Saturday morning. Kick-off with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
