Women’s Soccer Has Winning Streak Stopped By Sage

Megan DeRosa became the first player in program history to record 40 points in a season on Satruday

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team saw its program record six game winning streak stopped on Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 3-2 loss to visiting Sage. Freshman Megan DeRosa (Cornwall, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Mount and classmate Julia McGowan (Pearl River, N.Y.) recorded her 14th assist of the season.
 
Sage would break a scoreless tie in the final minute of the first half when Melissa Spring cleaned up a scramble off of a corner kick for the 1-0 lead at halftime. The pass off the corner kick came from Savannah Mason, with Spring scoring with 57 seconds left in the opening period.
 
Mount Saint Vincent finished the first half with a 7-4 edge in shots and a convincing 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Teagan Waddingham and Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) each made two stops for their respective teams before halftime.
 
Coming out of halftime, DeRosa quickly got the Dolphins even at 1-1 with her 16th goal of the season inside the first minute of the second half. She curled in a shot from the right corner 23 seconds into the half to level the score.
 
With the game tied at a goal apiece, Sage retook a one goal lead at 48:46 after being awarded a penalty kick. Jenna Retell finished off the kick to give the visitors a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
 
Sage would increase its lead to 3-1 after Nicole Maher finished off a pass from Alexis Whalen in the 52nd minute, before DeRosa struck again with just under 12 minutes to play in regulation. With the Dolphins down a pair of goals, DeRosa cleaned up a rebound in the box and deposited her 17th goal of the season in the 79th minute.
 
Trailing by a goal, Mount Saint Vincent would get two shots and a corner kick in the final 2:05 of regulation, but could not find the equalizer. Waddingham made a save on an Erica Lencsak (Hazlet, N.J.) shot in the final minute to secure the win for the Gators.
 
DeRosa moves to within a goal of tying the program single season record and breaks the single season point record with her scoring output on Saturday. She moves into the top spot in single season scoring, becoming the first Mount Saint Vincent to reach 40 points in a single season, with 41 in 2014.
 
McGowan extends her single season record in assists to 14 with the helper on DeRosa's second goal and now has 22 points through 14 games in her freshman season.
 
Martin finished the game with four saves for Mount Saint Vincent, suffering her third loss on the season. Waddingham earned the win for Sage with six stops.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent outshot Sage 17-9 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls in the contest were called 18-14 against Sage.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 11-3 overall on the season and to 3-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to league rival Purchase on Wednesday. Kick-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
