Men’s Basketball Scores First League Win Of The Season At St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Patchogue, N.Y. – Led by a double-double from senior Brandon Serrano (Hempstead, N.Y.) and 18 points from Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team won consecutive games for the first time this season and posted its first league win on Saturday with an impressive 82-58 road win at St. Joseph's-L.I.
 
Mount Saint Vincent trailed for just 25 seconds on Saturday and used a 17-2 run in the early going to jump in front by 13 points on a Khalil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) jump shot with 12:44 to play in the opening period. Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way for the Dolphins over the run with eight points.
 
After allowing the Golden Eagles to get within seven points, at 20-13, on a Sean McCarthy triple with 9:52 left before halftime, Mount Saint Vincent closed the frame on a 16-6 run to carry a 36-19 lead into halftime. The 19 points is the lowest total the Mount has allowed before halftime this season and the Dolphins held St. Joseph's to only eight field goals and a 24.2-percent conversion rate.
 
The Dolphins shot 44.4-percent in the opening 20 minutes and were led by 12 points from Serrano. Fraser totaled nine points for Mount and led the team with six rebounds before the intermission.
 
The Mount Saint Vincent lead would not fall below 12 points in the second half and it quickly expanded to 21 points, at 49-28, on a Serrano conversion just 4:40 in the second stanza. Following the Serrano bucket, St. Joseph's would scratch its way back to within 13 points midway through the second half, before Mount Saint Vincent put the game away with a 24-8 run to take a game-high 29 points lead on a pair of D'Andre McPhatter (Bronx, N.Y.) free-throws with 1:47 left in the tilt.
 
The Mount improved its shooting performance after halftime, converting at a 60-percent clip and going a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point distance. Serrano and Johnson each scored 13 points after halftime, with Johnson going 3-for-3 from behind the arc and knocking in four of his five free-throw attempts. Serrano went 6-for-11 from the floor after the break and Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) netted seven points and handed out four assists.
 
Serrano wrapped up the contest 12-for -21 from the field on his way to a game-high 25 points. He led the Dolphins with 10 rebounds and added four blocked shots. Fraser reached double-figures with 11 points on the day and secured nine rebounds to go along with a block and a steal.
 
Johnson scored in double-figures for the fourth time in five games with 18 points on the strength of a 4-for-7 effort from three-point range. He added three boards and three helpers to the winning effort. Regina hauled in a career-high eight rebounds and posted a career mark with six steals to go along with his four helpers.
 
The Dolphins shot a season-high 50.8-percent from the floor on Saturday and a season best 46.2-percent from three-point range. Mount Saint Vincent posted a 44-32 edge in rebounds in the contest and finished the day with 22 second chance points.
 
Saturday's wins moves Mount Saint Vincent to 3-12 overall on the season and to 1-7 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday with a home league contest with Maritime. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
