Yonkers, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team improved on the best start on record in program history with a 3-0 non-conference win over visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday night. Freshman Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) finished with a goal and an assist, while classmate David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded his seventh shutout of the season.
Freshman Victor Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the Dolphins on the board with the eventual game winner in the 10th minute on Wednesday. He buried a pass from Jardines at the 9:51 mark for his team leading eighth goal of the season. The deciding tally also ties him for the team lead in the category with four.
Mount Saint Vincent would extend its lead to two goals in the 24th minute when Jorge Chavez (West Covina, Calif.) scored his fourth goal of the season. He picked up a turnover at the top of the box and beat the keeper to the left post.
The Mount carried the play in the first half on Wednesday and finished the first 45 minutes with a 16-0 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Coming out of the break, the Mount closed out the scoring in the game when Jardines converted his seventh goal of the season 53:31 into the match. Marcial Aguilar (Yonkers, N.Y.) centered a ball from the left wing that Jardines deposited in the back of the net for the final three goal advantage.
With his goal on Wednesday, Ramirez leads the team in points with 18 but is followed closely by Jardines who has registered 17 following his three point effort against the Bears. Chavez became the fifth player on the team with at least 10 points with his goal and Aguilar picked up his first career point with the helper on Jardines' goal.
Melchor was not forced to make a save in the game in recording his ninth win and seventh shutout. He lowered his goals against average to 0.23 with Wednesday's effort. Michael Miner from St. Joseph's finished the contest with nine stops.
The Dolphins rounded out the night with a 28-0 advantage in shots and a 12-0 edge in shots on goal. Mount Saint Vincent took all 10 corner kicks that were awarded in the contest.
With Wednesday's win Mount Saint Vincent extends its season opening winning streak to nine games and stands at 9-0 overall. The Dolphins will open league play on Saturday evening when they welcome Sage. Kick-off at Gaelic Park is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
