Riverdale, N.Y. – Senior
Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 15 points, but the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team was upended by Mount Saint Mary on Sunday afternoon by a score of 65-49.
The Dolphins would lead twice over the first four minutes on Sunday, before Mount Saint Mary went on a 9-3 spurt to pull in front 13-9.
Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) would get the Mount back to a point with one two first half three-point field goals, but the Dolphins would not pull even again the rest of the day.
The Knights would take its largest lead of the period on a Chris Pisciotta triple at the eight minute mark to pull in front 23-15 and would close the half with seven of the final eight points to carry a 32-24 lead into the break. After a Cunningham jumper at the 2:42 mark, the Dolphins would manage just one point the rest of the half.
Despite shooting 33.3-percent from the floor in the first half, the Knights built their lead with four three-pointers and a 10-for-10 effort from the free-throw line. Pisciotta led all scorers with 12 points at the break on the strength of 4-for-8 shooting and a pair of three points.
Pisciotta would get the Mount Saint Mary lead to double-figures for the first time of the afternoon with a lay-in early in the second half and used an 8-4 stretch to jump in front 42-28 on a Joe Hanain free-throw at the 16:03 mark.
Following a
Stephen Oliver (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-pointer at 13:14 got the Mount back to within nine points, both teams went over three minutes without scoring. Three straight points from Cunningham would get the Dolphins to within six, but 10 straight points from the visitors keyed by three-pointers from Anthony Cipriano and Pisciotta would get the Knights out to a 16 points lead with just under six minutes left in regulation.
Following the 10-0 run, the Dolphins would not be able to climb closer then 15 points the rest of the game and fell behind by a game-high 19 points following a Henain conversion with 1:37 left.
The Dolphins went 8-for-24 from the field after halftime and finished the game shooting 31-percnet. Cunningham closed the day 6-for-17 from the floor and also secured seven rebounds.
Caputo finished with nine points on the strength of three triples with
James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) and
Michael Knott (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) each adding six.
Pisciotta posted a game-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting overall and added three triples. He hauled in nine boards and handed out three assists. Hanain had a strong day with 15 points and game-highs in rebounds with 11 and blocks with seven.
Donte Howell led all players with four assists, as the Knights helped on 14 of their 21 made field goals.
Mount Saint Mary finished the day with eight three-point field goals and misfired on two free-throws, going 15-for-17. The Knights held the advantage second chance points on Sunday 17-3.
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 6-17 overall on the season and to 4-12 in league play. The Dolphins will be back on the road Tuesday when they head to Sage for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off with the Gators.
