Barajas Nets Two Goals In Dolphins’ Win Over Yeshiva

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team scored a 2-1 Skyline Conference victory over Yeshiva on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jonathan Barajas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) tallied his first career multi-goal game in the win for the Dolphins.
 
Barajas broke a scoreless tie with his first goal of the game and his second of the season in the 31st minute on Sunday afternoon. He buried a feed from classmate Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) at 30:07 to push the Dolphins in front 1-0 late in the opening stanza.
 
Mount Saint Vincent carried the one goal advantage into the intermission after outshooting the Maccabees 9-8. Freshman goalkeeper David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) made three stops in the first 45 minutes to preserve the halftime lead.
 
The Dolphins extended their lead to two goals in the third minute of the second half when Barajas got on the board for the second time in the contest. Marcial Aguilar (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Tavelli Errar (Bronx, N.Y.) assisted on Barajas third goal of the season at 47:10.
 
The Mount held on to the two goal advantage until the 76th minute when Yeshiva got on the board courtesy of a penalty kick. Itamar Ben David sliced the Maccabbes deficit in half at 75:10 to close out the scoring in the game. The penalty kick was the last shot of the game for Yeshiva.
 
Barajas became the seventh Mount Saint Vincent player with multiple goals on the season and sits with seven points on the year. Jardines' assist ties him for the team lead in the category with five and gives him a team-high 29 points.
 
Melchor wrapped up the game with seven saves and earned his 12th win of the season. He sits with a 0.89 goals against average and a .828 save percentage. His counterpart from Yeshiva, Joseph Blechner stopped four Mount Saint Vincent shots.
The Dolphins finished the game with a 16-14 edge in shots overall, while Yeshiva held in the advantage in shots on goal 8-6. Corner kicks were 4-2 in favor of the Maccabees in the game.
 
Sunday's wins moves Mount Saint Vincent to 12-5-1 overall on the season and to 3-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out the 2013 regular season on Tuesday when they host Farmingdale State. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
