Dolphins Storm Past Gators In Overtime

Riverdale, N.Y. – Trailing by 18 points in the second half, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team rallied behind a career-high 35 points from James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) to score a key Skyline Conference victory over Sage, downing the Gators 77-73 in overtime on Thursday night. Kevin Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) also tallied a career-high, netting 10 points for the Dolphins.
 
Sage used a 26-9 run covering a 10 minute period in the first half to pull in front 35-15 after a Will Hennep three-point play with 5:50 left in the opening stanza. Henry would get the Dolphins to within 15 points with a lay-in at the 3:24 mark, but Sage took a 41-25 lead into the half after dominating the opening 20 minutes.
 
Sage shot just shy of 55-percent from the field in the first half and went 4-for-6 from distance to build its advantage. The Gators outscored the Dolphins 26-18 in the paint in the frame and received 13 points from Mason Horne on 6-for-8 shooting from the field.
 
Coming out of halftime, Sage collected two of the first three buckets of the second half to take an 18 point lead with 18:40 left in regulation. The advantage would stay in double-figures until Zuccaro capped off a 14-5 run with a conversion in the paint to get the Mount to within 50-41 with 15:20 to play.
 
After Hennep and Zuccaro traded three-point field goals, the Dolphins put together another run to tie the score at 55-55 with 7:13 left in the second half. After Hennep's triple pushed the visitors in front by 12, the Dolphins used a 14-2 spurt to tie the score for the first time all night.
 
Sage quickly got the lead back on a three point play from Ryan LaBelle, but Zuccaro answered with another trey to knot the score at 58-58. After not having a tie score until the 7:13 mark of the second half, the two teams would be deadlocked five times over the final seven minutes.
 
Gerard Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the Dolphins even with a tip-in with 2:51 left in the half and Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) forced the extra period with a tying basket with 12 ticks left. Each team had the ball in the final 10 seconds with the opposition forcing a turnover.
 
Mount Saint Vincent outscored Sage 39-23 in the second half and shot 47.2-percent overall and hit three triples to force the extra frame. Zuccaro scored 22 points in the second 20 minutes on 9-for-13 shooting.
 
The Dolphins finally pulled in front for the first time on the night when Zuccaro broke a 66-66 tie with a jumper midway through the overtime period. A 6-0 run from the Dolphins capped by a Fraser bucket gave the Mount its largest lead of the night and after going 2-for-5 from the free-throw line over the first 40 minutes,  it knocked in five free-throws over the final minute to secure the win.
 
Zuccaro scored better then 30 points for the second time this season after going 14-for-21 from the floor overall and hitting a pair of three-pointers. Hr finished up with a double-double after collecting a team-high 10 rebounds.
 
Fraser rounded out a strong night with 12 points and nine boards, while Henry scored in double-figures for the first time in his career after shooting an efficient 5-for-6 from the floor. He also hauled in three rebounds.
 
Cunningham matched the game-high with six assists to go along with six rebounds and D'Andre McPhatter (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to chip in six points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot.
 
Sage finished with a balanced scoring attack that featured five players in double-figures. Horne led the way with 17 points, with Farbotko, Ryan Sager and LaBelle eaching scoring 12 points. Sager led all players in the game with 12 rebounds, while Jeff Stopera handed out six assists.
 
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot 41.3-percent from the floor and held a 23-10 edge in offensive rebounding. The advantage on the glass led to a 19-9 edge in second chance scoring. The Dolphins also featured a 16-10 advantage in points off of turnovers in the game.
 
The win snaps a four game losing streak and moves the Mount to 5-12 overall and to 3-7 in league play. The Dolphins will look for their second straight triumph on Saturday night when they host Yeshiva. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
