Gooney nets career-high 12 points to lead the Dolphins

Patchogue, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was defeated for the fourth consecutive outing on Saturday following a 73-44 loss at the hands out league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. Sinead Gooney (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to lead the Dolphins in scoring with a career-high 12 points.
 
The Dolphins never led in the game and quickly feel behind by 13 points after a 17-4 run from the Golden Eagles to open the contest. Kayla Giordano (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) hit a jumper to get the Mount to within nine at the 14:07 mark of the first half, before St. Joseph's closed the period on a 25-8 run to take a 42-16 lead into the locker room.
 
St. Joseph's hit six three-point field goals and had three players in double-figures in the first half, led by 14 points from Danielle Hamlin. The Golden Eagles also forced 19 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, leading to a commanding 26-1 advantage in points off of miscues.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would battle back to cut its deficit to 11 points after a 19-4 spurt over the first 7:02 of the second half. Gooney scored nine points over the stretch for the Dolphins.
 
Christina Cohen answered a Gooney bucket with a triple to push the Golden Eagles back in front by 14 points. The three-point field goal started another big run to close a period for St. Joseph's, who finished the game on a 27-9 run to ease to the season sweep of the Dolphins.
 
St. Joseph's had four players in double-figures with Hamlin and Laura Cohen leading the way with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Hamlin knocked down five three-pointers in the game and also led all players with 12 rebounds. Cohen finished the game 8-for-20 from the field and joined Christina Cohen with a game-high five assists.
 
Gooney wrapped up the game 5-for-7 from the floor and hauled in five rebounds for the Dolphins. Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each chipped in with seven points on the afternoon. Fraser added team-highs in rebounds with eight and blocks with three.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent shot 32.7-percent from the field and 10-for-23 from the charity stripe. The Dolphins also failed to convert a three-point field goal for the second time this season.
 
The Golden Eagles converted on just 34.7-percent of their field goal chances, but knocked down 10 three-pointers. St. Joseph's forced 34 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers and turned those into 34 points.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 4-8 overall on the season and to 0-5 in league play. The Dolphins will step out of conference on Monday night when they play host to CCNY. Tip-off with the Beavers is set for 7:00 p.m.
