Morganne Booker (East Providence, R.I.) recorded a match-high 12 kills and rookie
Rachel Gabriel (Yonkers, N.Y.) handed out 17 assists as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team scored a 25-9, 25-18 and 25-20 win over visiting Yeshiva in its 2012 Skyline Conference opener.
Mount Saint Vincent was not challenged in the opening set after scoring 10 of the first 11 points of the match. Booker collected two of her 12 kills over that run and the Dolphins and also used a 7-0 run in the late stages of the set to cruise to a 1-0 lead.
After hitting .286 in the opening set, the Dolphins picked up 11 more kills and hit .258 in the second stanza. The Mount jumped out to a 2-0 lead and Yeshiva fought to tie the score five ties, with the final time coming on a Mount Saint Vincent service error to knot the score at 6-6.
Following the miscue, the Dolphins rebounded with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good in the frame. Booker and
Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) supported the spurt with one kill each.
Yeshiva got out to a 5-2 lead in the third set and did not allow the Mount to claim the lead until back-to-back points put the Dolphins in front 13-12. A Shira Genauer kill tied the score at 19-19, before Mount Saint Vincent closed the deciding set with six of the final seven points.
The Dolphins featured a balanced offensive attack that saw nine different players record a kill. Booker led all players in the match with 12 winners and a .357 hitting percentage and also led the way with a match-high five service aces. Booker rounded out a strong match with six digs and a block for the Mount.
Freshman
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) continued her strong early season play with nine kills, four digs and a block and DeMasi closed the night with seven winners, a match-high 13 digs and a pair of aces.
Gabriel handed out a career-high 17 assists for the Dolphins in the match and also added a pair of aces for the Mount.
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded 13 helpers for the Mount and
Carly Jenkinson (Pacifica, Calif.) lifted 12 digs.
Overall on the night, Mount Saint Vincent recorded 36 kills to just 10 for Yeshiva. The Dolphins had an effective night serving with 16 aces and the team also lifted 64 digs to 49 for the Maccabees. The Dolphins also finished the match with a 2-0 edge in total team blocks.
With the win, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 3-3 overall on the season and to 1-0 in league play. The Dolphins will look to get back above the .500 mark on Thursday when they play host to Staten Island. Match time at the Peter Jay Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
