Yonkers, N.Y. – Freshman
Allison Bhadai (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and senior
Sarah Colletti (Mansfield, Mass.) each scored for the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, but the Dolphins were edged by visiting CCNY 3-2. Saturday marked the sixth straight season opening loss for the Dolphins.
Bhadai got Mount Saint Vincent's season off to a strong start just 1:19 in the game when she finished off a feed from classmate
Meghan Siller. Siller chipped pass inside the box and Bhadai beat the netminder high for an early 1-0 lead.
The Beavers battled back in the middle stages of the half and eventually tied the score at 1-1 when Dzindzi Asamoah-Wade converted a free kick from just outside the box to knot the score. Heading into halftime, CCNY held an 8-3 edge in shots and took three corner kicks.
Colletti regained a one goal edge for the Dolphins just 2:22 into the second half on a penalty kick. She found the top right corner to get the Dolphins out in front 2-1 in the season opener.
Trailing by a goal, the Beavers converted twice inside a five minute stretch. Gloria Cevallos tied the score at 2-2 when she headed home a free ball at the 55:50 mark of the contest. After assisting on the equalizer, Elif Demircan picked up the game winning goal of a pass from Asamoah-Wade with just under 30 minutes to play in regulation time.
Mount Saint Vincent had three strong chances inside the final seven minutes of action on Saturday, all from Bhadai. Still trailing by a goal, Bhadai just missed a shot wide to the far post and then was denied by CCNY keeper, Nicole Carroll, twice inside the final three minutes.
Carroll finished the day with six saves for the Beavers to earn her first win of the season. She was supported by three points each from Demircan and Asamoah-Wade.
Sophia Cunningham (Flushing, N.Y.) posted a pair of stops in her first career start in goal.
Overall on the day, CCNY posted a slim edge in shots at 13-12 and also held the advantage in corner kicks at 8-3. Fouls in the match were whistled 9-8 on the day against the visitors.
At 0-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Vincent will host York on September 6. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Westchester Community College.
