Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team fell for the sixth time in its last seven games on Wednesday night after a 54-40 home loss to Sage.
Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) led the Dolphins with 12 points, while
Amy Delva (Nanuet, N.Y.) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.
Mount Saint Vincent never led in the game and fell behind by as many as 11 points late in the first half. The Gators used a 14-6 stretch capped by one of four Carly Vallee first half triples to pull in front 26-15 with just under four minutes to play before the break.
Following the Vallee triple, the Dolphins picked up the defense and did not allow a Sage point the last 3:41 of the half. Over that time the Dolphins reeled off an 8-0 run that was finished off by a
Brittany Griffin (Suffern, N.Y.) bucket with two seconds left in the period.
Sage Owens (Narrowsburg, N.Y.) scored half of the Dolphins points in the run as went to the locker room trailing 26-23 at the intermission.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, but the Gators knocked down six triples to gain the advantage. Vallee finished the half 4-for-6 and Sarah Carciobolo knocked down two as the duo combined for 22 of the team's 26 points.
Mount Saint Vincent went the first 10 minutes of the second half only scoring two points. The Gators took advantage and jumped out to a 12 point lead after a Vallee lay-in at the 11:41 mark.
A
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper with 9:22 remaining sparked a 13-3 run for the Mount finished off by a Rosa three-pointer with 5:06 to play to bring the Dolphins to within 40-37. From there, the Gators closed the game on a 14-3 run to secure the road victory.
The Dolphins struggled to get anything going offensively on Wednesday and shot a season-low 17.3-percent from the field. The Dolphins also struggled from the free-throw line after converting just 12 of their 22 attempts.
Rosa finished the night leading the Mount in scoring for the third straight game and also added four rebounds and four steals. Fraser added eight points and
Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) posted six. Each player hauled in 12 rebounds, with Fraser blocking three shots.
Sage was paced by Caciobolo who finished with 19 points to go along with three assists. Vallee chipped in with 18 points and also added three helpers. Amie Jefferson had a big night for the Gators after totaling game-highs in rebounds with 16 and blocked shots with 10.
Sage closed the night shooting 32.8-percent from the floor but an even 50-percent from behind the arc. Carciobolo and Vallee teamed up to go 7-for-12 from long range in the game for the visitors.
The loss sees Mount Saint Vincent fall to 6-17 overall on the season, 2-11 in league play and to 2-9 in home games. The Dolphins will wrap up the 2011-12 season on Saturday when they host NYU-POLY on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
