Albany, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team got back into the win column on Wednesday night after picking up a hard fought road win at Sage by a score of 84-71. Senior
Cody Gauvard (Rockaway, N.Y.) led three Mount Saint Vincent players in double-figures with a game-high 18 points.
The Mount got off to a sluggish start in the state capital on Wednesday and after a 12-2 Sage run, the Dolphins found themselves trailing 24-13 with 7:35 to play before halftime.
Mount Saint Vincent would trail by 11 two more times in the first half, before putting together a 13-3 run capped by a
Michael Knott (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) bucket to get to within one point, at 31-30, with 1:15 left in the period.
Sage would respond with the final five points of the stanza after a triple and a two-point field goal from Troy Nwanna to head to the intermission with a 36-30 lead over the Mount.
The Dolphins shot 37.1-percent as a team in the opening 20 minutes, with Gauvard coming off the bench to lead all scorers with 10 points. He went 5-for-9 from the floor and also handed out a pair of assists. Mount Saint Vincent used eight offensive rebounds and 10 second chance points to stay within striking distance.
Mount Saint Vincent came out of halftime and picked up its first lead of the night since 3-0 when
Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) converted a three-point play at 14:13 to push the Mount in front 44-43.
The two teams would trade the lead eight times over the final 14 minutes of regulation on Wednesday, with neither side gaining more then a two point advantage until Waite converted a layup to get the Mount in front 62-59 with 7:36 left to play.
The Dolphins would spread its lead out to double-figures after a
Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) triple at the 3:49 mark, before a pair of Cunningham free-throws capped a 12-3 run and gave the Dolphins a 74-62 edge.
Mount Saint Vincent knocked down six free-throws, all from Cunningham, in the final three minutes to pad the lead and secure the road victory. It is the second time the Dolphins have picked up a road win at Sage in their three trips north.
Gauvard finished the night 9-for-17 from the floor and also secured four rebounds for the Mount. Cunningham finished the night with 17 points and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, while
Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained three triples on his way to 14 points.
Knott finished the evening with a career-high eight points and also led the Dolphins with six rebounds.
Stephen Oliver (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Waite each netted eight points, with Waite and Cunningham each handing out five assists.
The Dolphins shot a blistering 67.7-percent in the second half and finished the game converting at a 51.5-percent clip. The Mount went 7-for-16 from behind the arc and turned 19 Sage turnovers into 22 points.
The Gators received 17 points from Mason Horne and 15 points and eight boards from Matt Farbotko. William Hennep led the team with three steals to go along with a pair of assists.
With the win the Dolphins have won six of their last nine and stand at 10-14 overall and 8-9 in Skyline Conference play. The Mount will look for its sixth straight home win on Saturday when it hosts NYU-POLY on Senior Day. Tip-off with the Blue Jays is slated for 3:00 p.m.
