Mount Saint Vincent Stumbles At League Rival Purchase

Waite nets 13 to lead Dolphins

Purchase, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team was handed its third loss in its last four outings on Saturday after falling at Purchase 89-70. Senior guard Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) led the Dolphins with 13 points.
 
After Mount Saint Vincent scored the first three points of the game, Purchase rallied with a 14-5 run to pull in front for good on the afternoon. William Williams capped the spurt for the Panthers with a triple at the 12:36 mark of the first half.
 
Purchase would push its lead to double-figures after an Andre Nixon triple at the midway point of the period before the advantage grew to a half-high 16 points twice in the final 1:25 of the half. Amar Reynolds scored the Panthers' last five points to send them to the locker room leading 39-23.
 
The Dolphins were cold from the floor in the opening stanza and went just 8-for-28 overall. The Mount also finished the first half shooting only 50-percent from the free-throw line. Waite scored eight of his 13 before halftime.
 
Purchase used the strength of five three-point field goals before the break to pull out in front. Craig Davis led the Purchase attack with 13 points and Nixon chipped in 10 before the half.
 
Coming out of the intermission, Purchase put together a 15-6 run over the first three and a half minutes to jump in front 54-29 after a pair of Nixon free-throws at 16:27. Mount Saint Vincent would string together a 12-4 spurt in the middle stages of the second half to pull to within 15 point with 9:09 to play, but that would be as close as it would get the remainder of the afternoon.
 
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent was outrebounded by Purchase 44-23 and the Panthers outscored the Dolphins 19-2 on second chance opportunities. The Panthers also scored 50 points in the paint on Saturday.
 
Purchase finished the game shooting 50.8-percent from the floor and 42.9-percent from behind the arc. Nixon and Davis led all scorers in the game with 23 points each and the duo combined to go 20-for-30 from the floor. Davis also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
 
Williams handed out six of the team's 16 assists and also swiped four steals. Reynolds netted 11 points for Purchase to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists.
 
Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 42-percent from the floor in the second half to finish the game shooting 35.9-percent overall. The Dolphins struggled from behind the arc, going 3-for-18 and from the free-throw line converting at a 58.3-percent clip.
 
Waite rounded out the game shooting 6-for-9 from the floor on his way to the team-high point total. He also handed out a pair of assists and swiped three steals. Waite and Cody Gauvard (Rockaway, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with seven rebounds apiece.
 
Yeuri Santos (New York, N.Y.) chipped in seven points and six boards in the contest and Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way with three assists to go along with a pair of steals.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 9-14 overall on the season and to 7-9 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Wednesday night when they head north to take on Sage. Tip-off with the Gators is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
