Riverdale, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Brandon Duenas (Gilbert, Ariz.) poured in a career-high 26 points and was one of five Dolphins to post a career-night in scoring as the Men's Basketball team picked up an 89-18 non-conference win over visiting Sarah Lawrence.
The Dolphins controlled the game from the tip, using a 43-1 run over the final 17:12 of the opening period to carry a commanding 53-6 lead into the locker room. The Dolphins held the Gryphons to just a single point in the half after a three-pointer from John Collector three minutes into the period.
Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 58-percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, outscoring Sarah Lawrence 34-0 in the paint, 31-1 off of turnovers and 26-0 in transition. Duenas led the way at the break with nine points, while
Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) chipped in with eight.
Sarah Lawrence would go without a field goal until a second Collector three-pointer with 13:46 to play in regulation. In total, Sarah Lawrence went nearly 24 minutes of game action between field goals.
Duenas picked up 17 of his game-high point total after the intermission and finished the night an efficient 10-for-12 from the floor overall and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Anthony Woods (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and
Seamus Douglas (Old Lyme, Conn.) also posted career-highs with 13 and 11 points.
Michael Knott (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) picked up career bests in assists with four and steals with four, while Cunningham finished up with four helpers and a steal in 10 minutes of work.
The Dolphins finished the game shooting a season-high 57.8-percent from the floor and turned the ball over a season-low five times. Overall, the Mount closed the night with a 50-0 edge in paint scoring, a 43-6 advantage in points off of miscues after forcing 33 and a 32-0 edge in transition tallies.
Francis Oppong led the visitors with seven points, with Collector closing the game with six on the strength of two three pointers.
The win gets Mount Saint Vincent back above the .500 mark at 4-3 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look for their fourth straight win when they return to league play on December 11 at Yeshiva. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
