Women’s Basketball Snaps Skid, Cruises Past Purchase

Riverdale, N.Y. – Senior Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) came up one point shy of her career-high and sophomore Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) scored a season-high 13 points as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team snapped a four game losing streak and earned its first league win of the season with a 61-38 win over visiting Purchase.
 
Mount Saint Vincent led wire-to-wire on Saturday and used a dominant first half to cruise past its league rival. The Dolphins opened the game on a 20-5 run and took a commanding 29-13 lead into the intermission.
 
The Dolphins held Purchase to just 21.4-percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes and the Mount defense forced 17 Purchase turnovers on its way to 18 points off of miscues.
 
The Mount converted 38.7-percent of its field goal chances in the opening period and was led by 10 points from McNish on 5-for-7 shooting. Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Rosa each knocked down three-pointers in the first half for the Dolphins.
 
Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent pushed its advantage to 20 points following a Rosa three-pointer with 13:12 to play in regulation and got out to a game-high 29 point lead following another Rosa triple with just over five minutes to play.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent featured a balanced scoring attack that saw eight different players score a point. The team shot better then 30-percent from the floor for the first time in four outings and also shot 75-percent from the free-throw line, the third highest mark of the season.
 
McNish finished off the game 7-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line on her way to a game-high 18 points. She also picked up her team leading fourth double-double of the season after securing a game-high 14 rebounds. McNish rounded out a strong all-around afternoon with three assists and three blocked shots,
 
Rosa came off the bench to net 13 points in the contest after knocking in three of her five three-point field goals and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Rosa also secured four rebounds for the Mount and handed out four assists.
 
Although scoring only four points in the tilt, sophomore Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, N.Y.) impacted the game with a game-high five assists to go along with six rebounds. Sinaly narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight boards and rookie Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in six points and three blocks for the Dolphins.
 
The Mount Saint Vincent defense held Purchase to just 26.2-percent shooting for the game and also forced 25 Panther turnovers. The Dolphins also held a big edge on the glass after outrebounding the visitors 53-39.
 
Purchase was held without a three-point field goal in the game after shooting 0-for-15 from behind the arc. The Dolphins have held an opponent without a three-pointer 21 times since the start of the 2003-04 season, with the last coming on February 10, 2011 when Bard went 0-for-4.
 
The win improves Mount Saint Vincent's overall mark to 4-8 overall on the season and to 1-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to carry their momentum against league opponents into Tuesday night's home date with St. Joseph's-L.I. Tip-off at the Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
