, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent sophomore Gabriella Astorino (Warwick, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of her career, including her first game winning tally as the Dolphins slipped past York on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 2-1. The win ended a three game losing streak for the Mount.
 
York got on the board first in the non-conference match in the 18th minute when Perla Espinosa lofted a shot over Mount Saint Vincent keeper Nicole Flores (Bethpage, N.Y.). The Espinosa tally was the only score of the opening 45 minutes as each team finished the frame with three shots.
 
Astorino took over for the Dolphins in the second half, scoring both her goals after the intermission. The first strike came at the 53:05 mark of the match when she floated a shot from 40 yards out over York keeper Darshani Thakoodyal.
 
With the score tied at 1-1 late in the contest, Astorino sent the Dolphins to the win with the game winning goal in the 82nd minute. Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) fed Astorino who found the back of the cage for the second time on the afternoon.
 
With her scoring output on Tuesday, Astorino is now tied for the team lead in goals and points with Shannon Doyle (Central Islip, N.Y.). Each player has a pair of markers in 2011 and four points.
 
Making her first career start in goal on Tuesday, Flores picked up the win for the Dolphins. She played the full 90 minutes for the Mount and totaled a pair of saves. York used a pair of keepers with Thakoodyal seeing the bulk of time and making six saves, while allowing only one goal. Latima Malachi was saddled with the loss for the Cardinals after surrendering the late goal.
 
Mount Saint Vincent had three players with at least three shots on the day. Astorino and Danielle Heumegni (Bronx, N.Y.) each led the way with four shots, while Doyle got off three shots for the Dolphins.
 
Overall in the match, Mount Saint Vincent outshot York 14-5, including 8-3 in shots on goal. The Dolphins took four of the five corner kicks on the day, while fouls were called 11-9 against the Dolphins.
 
Tuesday's victory sends Mount Saint Vincent to 2-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Purchase. The league contest will be played at Riverdale Country Day School and is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
