Maspeth, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker at John Jay on Thursday afternoon to open the 2011 campaign. The Bloodhounds got two goals inside the final 25 minutes to come away with the victory. Sarah Colletti (Mansfield, Mass.) led the offense with four shots, while senior Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) made six saves in goal.
The two teams played a scoreless first 45 minutes on Thursday, with the Dolphins holding a 7-4 edge in shots at the intermission. The game remained a scoreless tie until Bergelie Louis broke through for the Bloodhounds on a feed from Brenda Pitts to take a 1-0 lead at the 76:09 mark.
Leading 1-0, John Jay struck again just over 10 minutes later when Pitts tallied her first marker of the season at the 87:02 mark of the match. The Bloodhounds carried the play in the second period as they outshot the Dolphins 9-5 coming down the stretch.
Colletti led six players with at least one shot on the day for the Mount with her four. Eva Lugo (Monteria, Columbia) recorded a pair of shots for the Mount, as did Brittany Kehoe (Stony Point, N.Y.) and newcomer Shannon Doyle (Central Islip, N.Y.).
Overall in the match, John Jay held a slim edge in shots at 13-12 and the Bloodhounds also took two of the three corner kicks in the tilt. Fouls in the contest were whistled 10-5 against John Jay.
Both goalkeepers played solid games on Thursday, with McNish posting her six saves in the season opener. Marcelina Kopec made seven stops for the Bloodhounds in recording her first shutout of the season.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to even their record on Saturday when they travel to Montclair St. for a non-conference matchup with the Red Hawks. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
