Dolphins’ Season Ends With Skyline Tournament Loss To NYU-POLY

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss to NYU-POLY in the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Dolphins fell to the Blue Jays by scores of 14-25, 15-25 and 19-25. Senior Jessica Williams (Cornwall, N.Y.) led the Mount with seven kills in the contest.
 
The Blue Jays opened up a tightly contested opening set on Wednesday with a seven point run to take a 17-10 lead late in the frame. Corey Loupee helped lead the charge for NYU-POLY over that stretch with a pair of kills.
 
Mount Saint Vincent responded early in the second set by opening a quick 8-1 advantage. Williams collected a pair of kills over the run for the Dolphins, while Maureen Metzner (Mineola, N.Y.) and Erin MacBride (Merrick, N.Y.) each registered service aces.
 
Trailing 10-5, NYU-POLY rallied for 12 of the next 13 points; including an 8-0 run to take a 17-11 lead. Alexis Walker finished off a pair of kills for the Blue Jays over the spurt, while Shelby Bruns recorded a pair of service aces. Overall, NYU-POLY hit .286 in the set as a team on its way to a two set advantage.
 
The Dolphins would jump out to an early two point lead in the third set, but could not hold off NYU-POLY in the stanza. The Blue Jays would use three scoring runs of at least three points to earn the victory and advance to the semifinals. The Blue Jays collected 10 kills in the set to earn the sweep.
 
Williams finished the night hitting a blistering .462 of the Dolphins after posting her seven kills against just one error in 13 attacks. She also posted a pair of digs and a block assist on the night.
 
Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered five kills for the Mount on the night, while Metzner rounded out the match with four winners. DeMasi also recorded 14 digs, with Metzner adding eight digs to go along with a service ace.
 
MacBride paced the Dolphins by handing out 18 assists on the night and also chipped in with nine digs. Renee Reynes (Bronx, N.Y.) posted match-high 18 digs for the Dolphins and also contributed one kill.
 
NYU-POLY used a balanced attack led by 11 kills from Victoria Kalvert to advance in the tournament. She hit .360 in the match and also one of four Blue Jays with double-figures in digs with 12.
 
Bruns and Alexis Walker each totaled six kills for NYU-POLY, while Loupee led all players with 26 assists to go along with five kills. Melissa Pona led the Blue Jays with 17 digs on the night.
 
Overall on the night, Mount Saint Vincent recorded 20 kills, but hit -.017 as a unit, while NYU-POLY totaled 33 kills and hit .142 as a team. The Blue Jays lifted 67 digs to 55 for Mount Saint Vincent and also led the way in total team blocks 5-3. Walker led the way for NYU-POLY with three block assists.
 
The loss closes out the 2011 season for Mount Saint Vincent with a 10-20 overall record.
