Riverdale, N.Y. – In its 2011-12 season opener, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was dealt a 74-54 loss by visiting Vassar on Tuesday night. The Dolphins had two players score in double-figures on the night with Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, N.Y.) leading the way with 12 points.
 
Vassar jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage on Tuesday and went on to shoot 53.3-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes on its way to a commanding 41-19 halftime lead.
 
The Brewers had nine different players score in the period, led by eight points off the bench from Kristyn Tempora. Tempora also led the team with eight boards in the first half as Vassar collected 30 caroms in the opening stanza.
 
After shooting just 17.1-percent from the floor in the first half, Mount Saint Vincent came out in the second and used a 20-4 run over the first six-and-half minutes to slice its deficit to just six points with 13:29 left in regulation time. Andree DeLeon (Flushing, N.Y.) scored seven of her 10 points over that stretch for the Mount.  
 
Vassar would rebound and push the lead back to double-figures on a pair of free-throws from Brittany Parks and then expanded the lead back up to 20 points with just over four minutes left to play on a Parks lay-in. Mount Saint Vincent would not be able to get its deficit below 19 points the rest of the way.
 
Mount Saint Vincent struggled from the field all night against Vassar, finishing just 19-for-69 from the field. The Dolphins were also 0-for-7 from behind the arc, marking the first time the team has gone without a triple since January 4, 2006. Prior to Tuesday, the Mount had gone the last 154 contests with at least one three-point field goal.
 
Kluth finished the evening 4-for-13 from the floor, but went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line to lead the team in scoring. She also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out a pair of assists in the tilt.
 
DeLeon finished up 3-for-10 from the field and went 4-for-7 from the stripe to reach her 10 point total. She led the team with three assists on the night and also secured a rebound. Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) led the team on the glass with 10 boards.
 
Vassar had four players score at least 10 points in the contest, with Cyndi Matsuoka leading the way with a game-high 16. She tallied a double-double after collecting 10 rebounds and also finished the night with four assists.
 
Parks closed out a strong all-around evening with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and a game-high five assists. Tempora led all players with 14 rebounds and also tallied 10 points in the win.
 
Vassar cooled to just 36.6-percent shooting in the second half, but finish the night shooting 43.7-percent from the floor. The Brewers went 1-for-11 from behind the arc and just 11-for-24 from the charity stripe. The visitors dominated in the paint 38-22 and in points off of turnovers 22-12.
 
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 in the early going. The Dolphins will look to rebound on Friday afternoon when they take on D'Youville at the Max Ziel Tournament hosted by Oswego State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
