Purchase, N.Y. – College of Mount Saint Vincent junior Hugo Hernandez (West Harrison, N.Y.) broke a 1-1 second half tie with his second game winning goal of the season, as the Dolphins picked up their first Skyline Conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Purchase. Joshua Zumbado (Bronx, N.Y.) also scored his second goal of the season in the contest for the Dolphins.
After heavy pressure from the Mount in the first half, Zumbado got the Dolphins on the board with his second of the season with just under five minutes left before halftime. He finished off a crossing feed from Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who picked up his first helper of the season. It also marked the second straight game Zumbado scored for the Dolphins.
The one goal lead would hold until the 68th minute when Purchase would knot the score at 1-1. Robert Acosta carried the ball from the left into the box and fed a ball to the goal mouth where Nicolas Periera pounded in a rebound to tie the game.
The lead for Purchase would be short lived as Hernandez quickly got the Mount back in front with what proved to be the game winning tally. After a foul was called on Purchase, Hernandez buried the free kick inside the near post for his second of the season. Hernandez has scored the game winner for the Dolphins in each of their two wins thus far in 2010.
Junior netminder Javier Mandujano (Norwalk, Conn.) played a solid game in goal for the Dolphins and made three key saves to earn his second win of the season between the pipes. Purchase keeper David Kurzwell also played a strong game in goal and made 12 saves for the Panthers.
Mount Saint Vincent held a commanding 25-6 advantage in shots and outshot the Panthers 16-2 in the opening 45 minutes. The Dolphins also took six of the eight corner kicks on the afternoon and the fouls where whistled 11-10 against the Mount.
The win evens the Dolphins record at 2-2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Dolphins will look for their second straight win on Wednesday night when they travel to Mount Saint Mary. Kick-off with the Knights is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
