Dolphins’ Winning Streak Halted After Dropping Five Set Heartbreaker To Sage

, N.Y.The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team had its three match winning streak snapped on Friday night after a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to visiting Sage. The Dolphins fell by set scores of 25-11, 19-25, 19-25, 27-25 and 21-23. Junior Jessica Williams (Cornwall, N.Y.) posted 14 kills, while classmate Renee Reynes (Bronx, N.Y.) lifted 37 digs.

 

After the Dolphins cruised in the first set of the night, the match tightened up with Sage taking the next two to gain a two sets to one advantage. The Dolphins would battle back to take the fourth set, before the two teams battled hard in the fifth. Sage would eventually come away with the victory after the score was tied 17 times in the deciding stanza.

 

Williams led the Dolphins with her match-high 14 kills and also finished the night with 12 defensive digs. She was one of five players to post at least 10 digs in the match for the Mount. Irma Nepomuceno (Bronx, N.Y.) joined Williams with double-figure kills after posting 12 on the night. She also recorded a double-double with 14 digs.

 

Reynes added a pair of kills to her match-high dig total with Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posting 16 digs and nine kills. Erin MacBride (Merrick, N.Y.) also finished with a double-double for the Dolphins after handing out 17 assists in the match and lifting 16 digs.

 

Leonard had a strong all-around match on Friday night as she posted five kills and hit .385 for the Dolphins. She also chipped in with four aces, six digs and handed out a team-high 29 assists on the night.

 

Sage was led by Michelle DeNisco who totaled 12 kills to go along with 11 digs. Kelsey Wilson posted 32 digs in the tilt, while Joanie Cooney posted a match-high 32 assists to go along with 27 digs.

 

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 4-5 overall on the season and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to action at home on Sunday for two more league matches when they host Maritime and Purchase starting at 11:00 a.m.
