Soccer team played visiting Baruch to a hard fought 1-1 tie in double overtime on Friday evening. After falling behind 1-0 in the second half, Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) converted a penalty kick to bring the Mount to the draw.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie over the first 45 minutes, with the Dolphins' J.R. Downey (Highland Falls, N.Y.) firing high on the best scoring chance of the period. The Mount carried the possession much of the first half, but was outshot by Baruch 6-4 heading into the intermission.
The Bearcats got on the board first at the 49:34 mark of the match off a throw in from the right sideline. Jacob Cohen threw the ball into the box where it was volleyed to Valianstin Kiryovich who finished the goal inside the right post for a 1-0 Baruch advantage.
The lead would hold for nearly 20 minutes until the Dolphins broke through with the equalizer. After the Mount put pressure on in the box, Ricky Gonzalez (Stony Point, N.Y.) drew a foul in the penalty area, leading to Cohen's strike. The first year junior player tucked the ball under the bar to close out the scoring on the night.
Each team would have chances in the overtime sessions, with the Mount nearly earning the win after a restart in the second overtime. Gonzalez served a ball through the box just away from the feet of two charging Dolphins. Baruch also had a chance at a nearly wide open goal, with Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) clearing the ball near the goal line.
The game was tightly contested throughout, with Baruch holding the edge in shots 16-7. The Mount took two of the three corner kicks in the contest and fouls were whistled 20-18 against the Dolphins.
Junior Javier Mandujano (Norwalk, Conn.) made six saves against just one goal allowed, while his counterpart from Baruch, Michael Murphy, stopped three shots with also just one goal allowed.
The draw moves Mount Saint Vincent to 0-0-1 after its first match of 2010. The Dolphins will look for their first win of the season on September 9 when they travel to Medgar Evers. Kick-off with the Cougars is slated for 8:00 p.m.
