UNION, NJ – The Dolphins Women's Volleyball team dropped two matches on Friday on the first day of the Cougar Classic hosted by Kean University. Mount Saint Vincent dropped a five game match to Polytechnic by scores of 26-30, 30-19, 21-30, 31-29, and 12-15 before falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in three games by scores of 26-30, 23-30, and 28-30.
Meghan Flaherty (Yonkers, NY) had an impressive day for the Dolphins, as she totaled 34 kills over the two matches.
Against Polytechnic, Flaherty posted 21 kills in the match to lead the team. Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY) finished 11 winners, while Christina Pierre (Bronx, NY) had 10 kills for the Mount.
Bridget Leonard (Poughkeepsie, NY) had a season high 31 assists in the contest to go along with a team high seven service aces. Irma Nepomuceno (Bronx, NY) continued her solid rookie campaign with 12 assists and 15 digs against the Fighting Blue Jays.
Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY) led the team in defensive digs in the match with 37 digs and was followed by Tara Mead (Pearl River, NY) with 17.
Against the Merchant Marine Academy, Flaherty again was the team leader in kills with 13. Martinez contributed four winners in the match for the Dolphins. Leonard again led the way with 17 assists, while Nepomuceno finished up with six.
On the defensive side, Mead took charge with 20 digs to finish the day with 37. O'Shea turned in another double-digit dig performance with 10 and had an impressive 47 over the Mount's two matches. Martinez led the way with three solo blocks.
Following the losses, the Dolphins stand at 10-12 overall on the season. They will be back on the court for day two of the Classic tomorrow when they take on Brooklyn College and Purchase. The action gets under way at 1:00 p.m.
