RIVERDALE, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball squad split its first two matches of the Skyline Conference season on Saturday at Hayes Gymnasium. The Dolphins ran their winning streak to six matches in the first match of the day with a 3-0 win over Maritime. Scores for that match were 30-21, 30-21, and 30-21 in favor of the Mount. In the second match, the Dolphins dropped a hard fought battle with Old Westbury in three games. The Panthers squeaked away with the win with scores of 33-35, 28-30, and 26-30.
Against Maritime, Mount Saint Vincent had its first two double-digit kill outputs of the season. Meghan Flaherty (Yonkers, NY) led the charge with 11 kills. She also posted three assists, four service aces, and five digs in the match. Freshman Christina Pierre (Bronx, NY) also had a strong match, finishing with 10 kills and a.529 hitting percentage. Pierre also recorded a pair of total blocks.
Katie Balch (Peekskill, NY) also had a strong showing for the Dolphins, just missing a double-double, with nine kills and 14 digs. She also collected three of the team's 23 service aces. Other strong showings were turned in by Irma Nepomuceno (Bronx, NY), who finished with 11 assists and four aces and Bridget Leonard (Poughkeepsie, NY) who had 18 assists and seven service aces.
Against Old Westbury, Balch led a balanced offensive attack, as she finished with a team high 11 kills. Pierre finished nine winners against the Panthers and Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY) and Flaherty finished with six and five, respectively.
Leonard had 16 assists against the Panthers to go along with 10 digs. Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY) led the way in digs with 13, while Nepomuceno also contributed 10 to go along with three service aces.
With the split, the Dolphins stand at 6-6 overall on the season and 1-1 in Skyline play. They will return to the court on Sunday when they travel to Albany to take on Russell Sage. The match is set to being at 2:00 p.m.
