Women's Volleyball plays thriller games vs. the Blue Knights and the Lightning

Dolphins open with first loss in the Skyline Conference, drop heartbreaker to local rival Lehman, now 1-2

(Riverdale, NY) – Junior Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) had a monster afternoon, combining for 18 kills and 18 solo blocks during two matches, and freshman Michelle Dedvujak (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) had the finest day of her young career at the Mount, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team fell to 1-2 after dropping both ends of a tri-meet at Mount Saint Mary, 3-1 to the host Blue Knights and 3-2 to local rival Lehman College. The Mount is now 0-1 in Skyline Conference play after losing the opener to Mount Saint Mary.

Mount Saint Mary rallied early and often during the opener, winning the first two games, 30-20 and 30-18, before Mount Saint Vincent battled back for a hard-fought 31-29 win during the third game. The fourth game was a thriller as both teams enjoyed huge rallies, but Mount Saint Vincent fell just short, losing 28-30 to give the Blue Knights (3-5, 2-0 Skyline Conference) the win.

Martinez was incredible throughout the match, leading the Dolphins with nine kills against only four errors, and 10 solo blocks. Also for the Mount, Dedvujak enjoyed an impressive outing with six kills, and a team-high 10 digs.

The second match was a back-and-forth affair from the start as Mount Saint Vincent stormed by Lehman, 30-25 during the opening game, but the Lightning won the next two games, 30-17 and 30-20, respectively. Mount Saint Vincent made it a match in the fourth game, rallying for a 30-21 win, and setting up a deciding game that would prove to be the most exciting volleyball played all day. Each team enjoyed a lead during the fifth game, but Lehman rallied at the end for a 15-13 win and the match. Martinez chipped in nine kills and eight solo blocks, while senior Jessica Thorn (Farmingdale, NJ/Colt's Neck HS) had an outstanding match with six kills and 10 assists. Freshman Tara Mead (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River HS) also had a terrific match with a team-high 14 digs.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, Sept. 11 when they look to go 2-0 in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC), hosting Cooper Union at 7:00 p.m.
