Women’s Volleyball downs Sarah Lawrence to reach HVWAC Finals; Falls to St. Joseph’s in Championship Game

Predergast: 15 kills, 7 aces, 13 digs in two matches; Dauphinais: 12 kills, 17 digs in two matches

(Bronxville, NY) – Junior Roxanne Predergast (Center Moriches, NY/Westhampton Beach HS) had a combined 15 kills, seven aces, and 13 digs, and senior Jacqui Dauphinais (S. Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional HS) combined for 12 kills and 17 digs for the day as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team ended the 2005 season by defeating Sarah Lawrence College, 3-1 in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Semifinals, but losing to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), 3-0 in the HVWAC Championship Game. With the split, Mount Saint Vincent finished the 2005 season with a 14-19 record that included winning the HVWAC Regular Championship. Both matches were played at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York.

Against Sarah Lawrence, Predergast had nine kills, six aces, and eight digs, and Dauphinais added seven kills and seven digs, as the Mount won the opening game 30-23, but dropped the second game, 26-30. The Mount clinched the match with a 30-17 win in the third game and a 30-23 win in game four. Dolphin sophomore Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine's) had a huge match with six kills and five total blocks, and setter Monique Lopez (Bronx, NY/Aquinas HS) had a match-high 17 assists. Also for the Mount, Meghan Flaherty (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers) had an incredible match with a career-high nine service aces. The Dolphins had a team total of 23 service aces against only seven service errors.

The win led to a showdown between the top two teams in the HVWAC with the Dolphins falling to the second-seeded Bears in a match that was far closer than the score indicated. St, Joseph's swept the match by scores of 30-26, 30-19, and 30-20. Predergast led the way once again with six kills and four service aces, while Martinez was virtually unstoppable, accounting for 10 of Mount Saint Vincent's 14 total blocks.

After a 9-12 season in 2004 that saw the Mount finish fourth in the HVWAC and lose in the Conference Semifinals, the Dolphins exhibited tremendous improvement under first-year Head Coach Ennio Escoto, winning either the HVWAC Regular Season or Post-season Championship for the sixth time in seven years. With only two seniors departing due to graduation the program has high hopes that the 2006 season has even bigger things to come.
