Upset of the Year! Women’s Volleyball stuns defending Skyline Conference Runner-up USMMA-Kings Point 3-1

Dedvujak slams home 14 kills, Martinez: 10 kills, 9 blocks; Dolphins now 6-3, 2-1 Skyline Conference

(Riverdale, NY) – If USMMA-Kings Point is to return to the Skyline Conference Championship Round, it may very well take a trip to Riverdale to get there, and on Monday night, the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team proved just that. Freshman Michelle Dedvujak (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) slammed home 14 kills against only three errors, and junior Edeana Martinez (Bronx, NY/St. Catherine) was dominant at the net, registering 10 kills and nine blocks as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team stunned defending Skyline Conference Champion USMMA-Kings Point, 3-1 during a match played at Mount Saint Vincent. With the win, the Mount improves to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in Skyline Conference play … and they are now officially in the hunt for a Skyline Conference playoff berth.

This wasn't just a win, it was a win over one of the most storied Women's Volleyball programs in the Skyline Conference, a program that has been to the NCAA Tournament three times since 1999, and has several ECAC appearances under their belts as well. USMMA has been to the last two Skyline Conference Championship Matches. Simply put, USMMA is a powerhouse, but on Monday night, Mount Saint Vincent was just that much better. The Dolphins opened play with a 30-25 win in which they led by as many as eight. The second game proved to be a classic as both teams had golden opportunities to win, but the Mariners prevailed, 32-30. The loss only seemed to motivate the Mount even more as the Dolphins pulled out game three, 31-29 before clinching the match with a 30-19 win in the fourth game.

Dedvujak, who was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, put herself firmly in the running for Rookie of the Year honors with a monster night on the floor that featured eight kills alone during the first game, and 10 total digs, giving her a fourth double-double of the season. Martinez, despite being far smaller than the huge Kings Point middle, used her incredible jumping prowess to thwart the Kings Point middle throughout the night. Mount Saint Vincent also received a boost from senior Roxanne Predergast (Center Moriches, NY/Westhampton Beach HS), who chipped in 11 kills and a season-high 18 digs, and freshman setter Bridget Leonard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Lourdes) had an incredible setting night, registering 22 assists.

With all of the momentum in the world on their side, Mount Saint Vincent returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 27 when they host Centenary College at 7:00 p.m. A win would make Mount Saint Vincent 3-1 in Skyline Conference play, and put them firmly in the top four in the Conference.
