(Purchase, NY) - Two weeks ago, the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team proved that when Purchase College enters the Skyline Conference in 2007, they already have a major rival only minutes to the South. On Tuesday, the Mount's Women's Soccer team proved the same thing. Both teams battled, clawed, and fought their way through 90 minutes of soccer intensity that had all of the feelings of an important late-season conference game, and while Purchase took the game, 1-0, the reality was clear that when this game counts for Conference standings a year from now, it is going to be a rivalry.
Purchase scored the game's lone tally in the 36th minute when Jessica Noonan scored on an assist by Cian Duross, and then the Panthers spent the rest of the game trying to figure out the Dolphin defense. 16 times, Purchase went offsides, and the few times they did break through the Mount defense, junior goalie Alexis Alessi (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) was there to make the save, registering six stops during another outstanding effort. And while the Panthers enjoyed a 22-3 shooting advantage, most of the shots were from way outside as the Panthers struggled to figure out the Mount's defensive game-plan.
With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 6-6-1 for the 2006 season.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, Oct. 27 when they travel to Division II rival St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 3:30 p.m. start.
