Katherine Gentsch scored a career-high four goals as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team beat CCNY 8-0 |
Women's Soccer team dominated CCNY, 8-0 in a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) game played at CCNY. With the win, Mount Saint Vincent finished the regular season with an 8-7 overall record and clinched the second seed for next week's HVWAC playoffs after finishing the season 4-1 in Conference. The Mount also broke a two-game losing streak.
Gentsch wasted little time putting the Mount ahead, scoring an unassisted goal 31 seconds into the game. The Dolphins scored four times during the first 10 minutes of play en route to a 6-0 halftime lead as Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) scored at 4:42, Jessica McBain (Troy, NY/Troy HS) found the back of the net at 5:50, and Gentsch netted her second of the game at 8:40. Gentsch and Sara Fernandes (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory HS) scored during the latter part of the first half to extend the lead to 6-0 after 45 minutes.
The second half brought much of the same as the Mount scored twice within the first 20 minutes of play. Nabela Tahir (Flushing, NY/Cardozo HS) scored her first goal of the season at 48:30 to make it 7-0, and Gentsch concluded the scoring with her fourth of the game 15 minutes later for the 8-0 final score. Gentsch now leads the Dolphins with 16 goals and 34 points, and this was the sixth time this season she has scored the game-winning goal.
Not only was the Mount's offense overwhelming, but their defense pitched an emphatic shutout by not allowing a shot until mid-way through the second half. Dolphin goalie Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside HS) recorded her third shutout of the season without making a save as the Mount had the ball for most of the game.
Mount Saint Vincent will begin their quest for the HVWAC Championship on Thursday when they host a Semifinal game at 3:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined shortly.
