Sunday. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the HVWAC, and will now finish the regular season no better than second place in the conference as Staten Island (8-7-1, 5-0 HVWAC) clinched the HVWAC regular season championship with the win. The Mount travels to CCNY on Friday this week, and the result of that game will determine their seed in the upcoming HVWAC playoffs.
Sophomore Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) opened the scoring in the fourth minute when she joined the rush and scored a spectacular unassisted goal for the 1-0 lead. For Osorio the goal was her second during the last two games and fourth of the season, and she is second on the team with 12 points as a sweeper. For Mount Saint Vincent, the scoring would end there as the Dolphins were held to 11 total shots, only five of which were on goal.
Staten Island tied the score in the seventh minute after Andrea Kleboe fired a direct kick past Mount goalie Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside HS) to make it 1-1. From that point, the two teams engaged in a defensive struggle where neither scored until the 70th minute when Staten Island forward Shannon Connelly scored off a pass from Fiosa Begai for their first lead of the game. The Mount appeared to tie the score moments later when Jessica McBain (Troy, NY/Troy HS) scored off a crossing pass, but as Mount Saint Vincent celebrated, the game officials ruled the play offsides and the goal was negated. From there, the Mount never did threaten to tie the score.
For Mount Saint Vincent, Alessi made five saves while the Mount defense only allowed 14 Staten Island shots. The Dolphins finish the regular season this week with two games. On Wednesday, Mount Saint Vincent hosts Manhattanville at 4:00 p.m. for their final home game of the regular season. The game will be played at Maritime College. On Friday, the Mount travels to CCNY for a huge HVWAC game with the Beavers as the Mount will clinch second place in the HVWAC with a win. That game begins at 3:30 p.m.
