Men’s Soccer Falls in 4-3 Heartbreaker to Maritime

Herrera tallies fourth goal of the season

THROGGS NECK, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team opened Skyline Conference play with a hard fought 4-3 loss to Maritime on Saturday night. Chris Herrera (Flushing, NY) opened the scoring in the game with his fourth marker of the season.

 

Herrera finished a pass from Zack Coppola (Staten Island, NY) and beat Privateer keeper Mathew Kavanaugh at 23:41. Just under three minutes later Papa Guyere (Dakar, Senegal) finished a rebound on an attempted clear at 26:06.

 

The Privateers would answer the Guyere goal with fourth straight to take a 4-2 lead late in the second half. Patrick Masango led the Maritime attack with a goal and two assists in the contest.

 

At 88:13 the Dolphins pulled within a goal, at 4-3, when Mike Hernandez (Ridgefield, NJ) put away a penalty kick for his second goal of the season.

 

Junior goalkeeper William Raftery (Throggs Neck, NY) got the nod in goal for the Mount and made six saves in the contest. Kavanaugh made four stops in the match for Maritime.

 

Shots in the game were 17-12 in favor of the Privateers, including 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were also in favor Maritime at 8-6, while fouls were 15-10 against the Dolphins.

 

At 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline Conference, the Dolphins will take on non-league opponent John Jay on Monday. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, NY.
