(Purchase, NY) - In 2007, Purchase College will join the Skyline Conference with soccer being one of their strongest athletics offerings. In honor of Purchase's entry into the Conference, they may officially have their first arch-rival ... at least in Men's Soccer as Mount Saint Vincent and Purchase proved on Saturday that neither team will give an inch when they face each other on the field. Saturday marked the final time the two teams will meet as non-conference foes, and the result was an outstanding one as the team's played to a 1-1 tie during a game that was as intense as it was entertaining. With the tie, Mount Saint Vincent is now 3-6-1.
After Purchase scored an early goal during one of the Mount's rare defensive break-downs, Mount Saint Vincent tied the score late in the first half as senior Chris Herrera (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) notched his 10th goal of the season on a penalty kick. Herrera's heroics provided the final score of the day, but the lack of scoring did not mean a lack of offense. Both teams had several opportunities to take the lead throughout the second half and during both overtimes, but both defense's held, and the draw came at the end of two overtime periods.
Mount Saint Vincent stayed in the game thanks to an incredible day for goalie Martino Cecere (Rye Brook, NY/Blind Brook HS), who stopped nine out of 10 shots, several of which were from point-blank range.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, Oct. 9 when they face CCNY at 7:00 p.m. at Randall's Island.
